Low Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound (LIPUS)
LIPUS is a cutting edge treatment modality used for the treatment of fractures, stress fractures and ligament injuries. Its benefits have been scientifically proven and include: faster fracture, ligament and stress fracture healing times in addition to decreased rates of failed healing.
Faster bone and soft tissue healing means an earlier return to work or the playing field, a fact that has lead to its use at the AIS and Olympic level as well as numerous professional National level sporting clubs. Clinical trials have consistently shown a 30-38% decrease in fracture healing times. This translates as an average of two weeks off the normal healing time for a metatarsal stress fracture for example.
If your treating physiotherapist determines that LIPUS will benefit your rehabilitation they will instruct you in its use. The treatment regimen involves application for twenty minutes five days out of seven for four weeks.
LIPUS consists of only one facet of the clients treatment. Predisposing biomechanical abnormalities and training errors will also be identified and corrected whilst thorough strengthening, stretching and return to sport programs will also be provided as appropriate.
LIPUS forms yet another weapon in the armoury of Peninsula Sports Medicine Group's Sports Physiotherapists for the optimal management of its patients and athletes injuries
